A Black Deeper than Death
Original name:
Author: M.E. Purfield
Translation:
Series: Mikki Radicci (Tenebrous Chronicles), 1/3
Number of pages: 98
Published: 2012 by Smashwords
Type: e-book
Genre: thriller, crime, urban-fantasy, super-powers

Mikki is sixteen years old famous painter and she can feel others strong feelings or pain but after she witnessed a murder, not only police became interested in her. Mikki's curiosity drive her to solve the case on her own even it could be very dangerous.

Author's style was really my taste, even he used some clichés and not original thoughts he was able to put them in the story by the amusing and interesting way so I was able to enjoy it. And of course I love his sense of humor.

Characters were well-made. Mikki was sometimes a little bit annoying at the start but it can be pardoned because it just go well with other characters. And I loved the chemistry between her and police officers. On the other hand Chris were quite a poitless element here. I mean he showed up, been with Mikki for a while and then just died in absolutely stupid way. Probably because of tension but it didn't work for me.

Story goes well too. It was interesting, sometimes little thrilling, and I really wanted to know more about Mikki's power and relationship with police officer. Yeah there were some things which didn't make sense or were obvious (Mikki told police what she saw even it would be impossible without her power so she became suspect, she get into dangerous club just to be caught and almost killed, Chris showed up just from a nowhere and has an interest for her) but overall I enjoyed it and it was really relaxing read.

Second Bite
Original name:
Author: Lauren Stewart
Translation:
Series:
Number of pages: 76
Published: 2012 by Off The Hook Publishing
Type: e-book
Genre: urban-fantasy, vampires, romance

Olivia works as organiser and her newest event is birthday party of vampire boss. It's quite a nightmare for her because she don't trust them even they declares themselves as harmless. But everything changed when she met Daniel.

A lot of story is about nothing, just some blabbing between Olivia and Daniel which didn't have any sense. I mean, she was freaked about vampires but two sentences from Daniel just convinced her that everything is just OK. Sorry but this is highly unbelievable. And what's worse, they can have some very intimate moment together. Surprisingly this was abandoned by greatly made plot twist which was expected but still made awesomely well.

Characters, well, in so tiny time I wasn't able to get into them. There wasn't any deeper things or precisely made background. Daniel got a little more of spotlight but still everything interesting was just spoiled by his resurrection and I am not a fan of those.

Overall. It had good idea but for me it was too short and unedeveloped.

Roadwork by Stephen King

Roadwork was quite a good book but insanely slow and something very interesting happened only in the end. But what about covers?

Bulgarian editions:

First one is just too plain for me, too average, but in next to it the second one is really better. I like the colours because red, black and white makes awesome combination. And there is very nice drawing which makes me feel a little bit uneasy and that works very well for King's books.

Czech edition:

Another quite plain design even I like how they worked with colours, they just match together, and I like how it goes with book's theme.

Dutch edition:

I don't like colours of this. Maybe if it would be only black and white it would be better, but the threatening vibe is awesome.

English editions:

Wow, lot of them have western style XD and that is not my cup of tea. But the last one is one of the best here. I like composition and toning of colours and how they creatively put book's name there. This cover is just awesome.

French editions:

First one looks like for some third-grade horror movie about vampires or other monsters and it quite don't fit. Second one is better even colours are quite dismatched for my taste and have weird tones.

German editions:

First one looks very amateurish and simple, like they didn't want to spend more time on it. I really like second one. It's the best of simplistic ones. Only two colours and picture which says a lot. This is my second most favourite. Third cover is good too, picture gaves me shivers but title is in bad colour almost lost here.

 Greek edition:

Ok, it matches the theme but that big purple name is just horrendous.

Italian editions:

First one is quite interesting. I like its colours and that title with author's name don't strike the eyes. Second one is great. How they used colours, the theme of it, and title with name is nicely visible. Really good work.

Norwegian edition:

This one is just weird. If I would pick it up jost for the cover I wouldn't have idea what it is about. And colours are just in wrong tones.

Polish edition:

Another simple one which looks quite good. The dark atmosphere is really great. But sadly font is very plain and there is no creativity in it.

Portuguese edition:

Great colours and I love how they put name and title there. It just catch your eyes.

Russian edition:

Another awfully colourful one which has very bad horrorish vibe.

Spanish editions:

First two are quite same but second is better done. Colours, creativity and font is likeable. Third one is best of these. There is similarity to the second one (background) but it's more darker.

Swedish edition:

Quite nice and simple but there is no need for more than three colours if it is like this.

Turkish edition:

Quite don't understand this one. Why skyscrapers? And there is too much colours for me and it's very chaotic.

So, which one do you like the most? And why?

Stargazer

Original name:
Author: Melanie Matthews
Translation:
Series:
Number of pages: 183
Published: 2012 (U.S.)
Type: e-book
Genre: sci-fi, dystopy, romance, young adult

Ava had woken up in a laboratory with no memories about how did she got there or who she really is. Everybody tries to convince her that she is Stargazer, alien very similar to humans but with purple eyes, hair and inhuman strength but she didn't believe it. Stargazer are known as a race with no emotions and Ava has a plenty of them, there is no way!

This book is young adult and I am not a big fan of them but even that it still has something fresh and individual. Narrative style is very well-made, detailed on a inner world of main character which perfectly fits with first-person. The author also managed to perfectly master the background of her story and this is very important for me. I need story to live, to feel like this could happen or believe it could work like this. And Stargazer definitely gave me this impression.

Characters were good and developed. Ava was really great heroine, very sympathetic, thoughtful and pondering. I liked her immediately and due to the narration I empathise with her very quickly. Red Woman was this kind of character you would hate but she was made like that and I accepted her role in story. John and Victor were also interesting. Their attitude towards Ava or system in Corporation was enjoying and I understood their difficult decisions or behaviours. And Henrietta? This character went through amazing evolution and it hadn't felt rushed. About Stargazers, they were mysterious element here and they will definitely attract your attention so it's kinda sad there weren't much about them.

The story itself opened with a lot of questions which were answered through the story, but between that it still caught my interest. It revealed small hints and you could interpret them correctly or wrong and even some things were predictable, the final outcome was quite surprising. The dystopian element itself was, as I mentioned, very good. Ava coped not only with her memory loss but also with unfamiliar system. Mysterious tyrant Pallas was like a God in Corporation, he controlled the lives of all inhabitants and everything slightly off the regulations was strictly punished. Author just had a lot of great ideas and she was able to use them properly. Unfortunately the ending was very rushed, as if the author wanted to have the whole story finally over and it really didn't make good.

Some authors stretch their story ad absurdum but Stargazer would definitely need more additional pages. The Stargazer's impact to the story, Pallas and his back story, unnecessary deaths of several characters... This book suffers from too rapid closing pace, not developing things which were extremely interesting and would make story way more better. I felt very sorry for it because I loved the story and characters.

This rushing was also reflected in the relationships when Ava felt too quickly for John and Victor as they for her. It was almost immediately and for me this kind of things needs some time, not just first glance and first few words.

Overall. Book with awesomely good start and elaborated characters and world but suffers from the fact that everything is bit of hurried.

Stealing Mercury

Original name:
Author: Charlee Allden
Translation:
Series: Arena Dogs, 1/?
Number of pages: 302
Published: 2015 (U.S.)
Type: Paperback
Genre: sci-fi, erotica, romance, action

Mercury was born as a slave, as an Arena Dog, and his life is about fighting in arena, killing his people and enjoying those who enslave them. Samantha Devlin is a freight pilot and her newest job is for Roma Company with three breathing Arena Dogs in her cargo. She is taking them to death but learns that they are not so scary as their whip master says. Would she do anything?

Ok I must say I really loved author's writing style. It was smooth, likeable and always got me into mood. The world and universe of this book was very well made and detailed. Political and cultural idea was very believable and it worked really good together. Also it was realistic, not just another world so optimistic it wasn't possible. Here was slavery, cruelty and other not so nice things but it made everything more real so I was able to sink into story. But, yeah there is one big but. Really bad work with characters and long, boring descriptions (seriously I don't need to know how awesome he is every freaking page ok?) spoiled it for me.

Characters. At first I quite liked them. Samantha wasn't naive and stupid but neither some rambo in a skirt and that's why I liked her. She was sympatic. But after she started to feel something for Mercury her character got degraded very quickly. She just did what he said even she wasn't sure about it and it just simply didn't go well with her beying independent. Mercury was one of those non-original and generic badass males who are still very caring and gentle. Honestly I didn't care about him because his only thoughts were: sex, protect, sex, protect, sex and well you can't work with this very much. Lo was a guy you must convince to believe you and Carnage, damn, he was the best one! I was interested in him the most but unfortunately he always disappeares because he was useless in a sex scenes. Other characters were just plain, whip master and his co had a potential but sadly it wasn't used fully. Well everyone next to the main threesome were about nothing and because the relationship between those three was horribly made it just sucks in overall.

My problem about relationships in this book... Insta love with no reason is not beliavable even if he is sexy male. Just no. It would be OK if they went through something first but they just saw each other and immediately fell in love and become lusty. Sorry but this is not working for me. And to making it worse Lo became a part of it, great! I am not againts threesome it could be cool but not in this book. This kind of relationship wasn't made well here. At first, Sam didn't like the idea of threesome but was convinced for it very quickly. Like superfast quickly. And what is more worse Mercury and Lo practically didn't care that she is not for it. They forced her to it. And this is not love when you force someone to something. When you love someone you respect his or her statements, not just make them do what only you like. Sorry but I hate how this was made and I couldn't agree with this kind of love, which wasn't exactly a true love. And sex scenes? There was no reason for many of them and it felt kinda stupid.

Story. Good Lord I am such a greatful for a story in this book because it was really good! Action scenes were awesome, it was very thrilling and I just wanted to know what woudl happened next. I was really hooked but sadly characters and their relationships just ruined it.

Overall, good realy good story with elaborated world, but that's all.

My new e-books 2

Yay! I've just download another bunch of interesting books *sighs* my poor laptop probably won't last for long because it's soo full XD

Well as a lover of dystopian books this caught my interest. Not just because story seems interesting but the cover is somewhat amazing and I usually don't like covers like this =)  But it could be another of those copy books which don't bring anything new. I hope this is not that case...

Another dystopia which sounds interesting and I really want to know how author used her story about believing in God and world where it is prohibited. I am not a believer but it doesn't mean I hate religion. I have a little Bible at home and love reading stories from Old Testament which are my favourite. But yeah I am afaraid that this would be religion propaganda so I hope it's not because that would totally spoil the book for me.

Surpisingly another dystopia. Humans as slaves of aliens... this is always interesting. I hope there would a lot of fighting against opressers, some rebelious things and etc because I like this in books (that's why I for example loved Delirium, the story went very well in second and third book).

So did you hear about any of these books? And if so did you read them? Did you liked them or not and why?

The Labyrinth

Original name:
Author: Dorian Zari
Translation:
Series:
Number of pages: 419
Published: 2014 by Smashwords
Type: e-book
Genre: urban-fantasy, horror, mystery, supernatural, thriller

WOW! Just WOW!! First chapter was one of the best first chapters I've ever read!
The story was fast-pacing and thrilling and there wasn't much slow or bad parts. I also love author's sense of humour and even this wasn't humorous book I laughed a lot. Labyrinth also had some very original ideas and I am grateful for them because it's hard to make some (well this story is about four people with some powers, I know it doesn't sound original but it is) and be enjoyable or interesting at the same time. Another thing which totally got me was connection. Yeah it jumped a lot between characters and could be a little confusing but those little details which were mentioned there and were very important in other parts of story amazed me. I like complicated books which has more layers or tells more stories. And of course it was unpredictable.
Characters were interesting even they weren't too deep but the story definitely compensate it. At least they were realistic and unique and I was able to feel their emotions (that is very important for me).

But, of course, there are some negative points. Well I didn't mind some crazy stuff which was sometimes too much crazy for me or some not so logic things (it didn't disturb me much). I have a big problem with ending which wasn't of my taste. I quite didn't understand what happened and I felt like it was rushed and too complicated. And that I didn't know what was the story about, why it is happening, why they have powers and etc., for the whole book.  That quite disturbed me.

Overall? This book was awesome! I can't believe this is author's first book!! It was so thrilling that I couldn't stop reading (400 pages in four days!!)! And even I didn't like some things I am looking forward to author's next book.

Ratig: 8/10

This book was given to me by its author Dorian Zari. Thank you very much!!

The Escort Next Door

Original name:
Author: Clara James
Translation:
Series: The Escort Next Door, 1/3
Number of pages: 131
Published: 2013 by Romance Novel (U.S.)
Type: e-book
Genre: erotica, romance, fiction

Julia lives her happy life with successful husband and three kids or more specifically it just looks like she has a nice marriage. Her husband became distant and then she reveals his horrible secret. What is she supposed to do? Her decision is to change her life completely.

I really liked the author's writing style which was enjoyable and her choose of words but I can't tell this about story or characters.

Julia is an awful main character and she really got on my nerves. She was so stupid and naive that I wasn't surprised by her husband cheating her so much. Who would be? She was extremely passive silly housewife who hasn't think about anything just how not worthy for her sweetheart she is. Come on! Even he was a bastard who only terrorised her (women are not supposed to clean your mess or give you a sex whenever you want) she idealised him and even didn't think about anyone else in her whole life (for real? who the hell did raised her? the Amish people?). Other characters are plain, they are in story just for the story and you could easily replace them (Julia's friend for example it could be her mother, some stranger going around and giving her this stupid idea, whatever). There is also no chemistry between them and they are just blabbing around about nothing (yeah insert some stupid conversations here). Even the plot idea sounds interesting the characters killed it absolutely.

The story is cheap and has so many holes that it's quite surprising it still somewhat works (well not so much for me obviously).
1) Her husband just had a billions of emails from his escorts and one night stands. How convenient! Did he never heard that it's super easy to get into your mailbox?
2) Divorcing. This was super extra problem here because he could get kids. I don't know how it's working in America but in my nation kids usually get with mother and there must be a really big problem if not. I mean Julia could live with her friend ok? And finding job I mean normal job it's not such a problem. If she really wants she could find a job before divorcing (normal job) and cover it up like she need to be with people or something for her or whatever. But no! Not in this story she must be an escort because author wanted it! Screw the logic!
3) Which friend would give you this kind of job idea???? Working as a pole dancer or stripper? Really? Not helping her with money or just taking her to her house but this?
4) At first Julia insist about pole dancing but suddenly she is okey with escorting which is not believable.
5) Escorting sounds like awesome fun and you can get a huge amount of money... Come on! It's not a fun! It's dangerous! You can get raped, beaten, kidnapped, killed, whatever, especially if you are doing it on your own like Julia (nobody knew where she was or what she was doing). And of course having nice, beautiful and humble client is a complete rubbish (nice man are not waiting for you at corners).

I might be digging to much into it but for me story needs a logic and common sense and The Escort is really missing it. It's just a fairy tail for old women who loves to look around in pink glasses but sorry world just don't work like this.

Sex scenes were kinda ok but I am really fed up with everything going awesome and perfect.

Overall. I've read worst than this but the optimism about this kind of job really annoyed me.

My new e-books 1

Hi,
I love e-books even the real book is just a real book and nothing can replace it but I download a huge amount of freebies and slowly stocking them in my kobodesktop (just love to open it and watch how much I have XD). So this is about my newsies.
If you read those books don't be afraid and write what you think about them because it could help me to choose what to read next (you know I have a little problem about what to choose because having about 600 books waiting-to-be-read is not really funny XD). Of course some great recommendations are appreciated!

I didn't pick this little story for myself I got it when I sign for newsletters from author (or I had a chance to download it so why not?) but I like the cover and of course the vampire theme. Annotation sounds interesting but I'm afraid of stereotypes and clichés. It's really short so did author made characters well in so few pages? And what about story? Not sure but at least this is not long so if I wouldn't like it I won't struggle much.

T.K. Leigh: A Beautiful Mess

OK I really don't know why I picked this book. Maybe because somebody recommended it to me as a good romance-erotic book so I probably give a chance to it. Unfortunately many romance books with erotica bore a sh*t out of me so I really hope this is different. Well at least story sounds interesting.

Rachel M. Humphrey-D'aigle: Demon Isle Witches

This box set sounds the most enjoyable. I love witches, I love supernatural, I love mystery. And it's three books in one which is good because I don't like unfinished series (well yeah still not whole series but more than only one book =)).

Ultimate Harry Potter tag

Hi there,
who wouldn't love HP series? I've grown up on it and because of Harry Potter (and yeah Lord of the Ring) I started to read more fantasy and other genders than before. So enjoy!

1) Favourite book?
Harry Potter and Prisoner of Azkaban. It's more darker than two first books, there is time-travelling, Sirius, werewolvish Lupin, scary dementors and of course Buckbeak. Just love it...

2) Least favourite book?
Harry Potter and the Deadly Hallows. I mean it was OK, the fightings and etc. but some deaths were quite unnecessary and pointless. I think that Rowling just wanted to kill of as many characters as possible even there wasn't any point in it. And of course I hate the way how Voldemort died, it was kinda stupid. I hoped for more epic showdown but well duh...

3) Favourite movie?
Hard question because I love Prisoner of Azkaban and Half-Bood Prince equally =) Well Prisoner is just... I wrote it above I love the book and movie was awesomely done and Half-Blood Prince was very very darkish. Like how they worked with Draco and Snape (plus I liked added scenes which weren't in books).

4) Least favourite movie?
Deadly Hollows second part. Firstly I didn't like how they did the final fighting in Hogwarts. In book it was thrilling but in movie well very confusing. And death of Belatrix and Voldy were horrible, horrible!!!

5) Favourite quote?
“It takes a great deal of bravery to stand up to our enemies, but just as much to stand up to our friends."

6) Favourite Weasley?
Fred and George. I can't separate them because Fred without George and vice versa is not Fred or George you know?

7) Favourite female character?
Hermione, because I'm book lover, library dweller and when I was attending school probably as big grind as she was.

8) Favourite villain.
Bellatrix Lestrange, she was crazy and obsessed. Very interesting woman.

9) Favourite male character?
Hard to say. Draco Malfoy or Severus Snape. I like how Rowling worked on their personality.

10) Favourite professor?
McGonagall, I really liked her. Sadly she didn't had a lot of important parts but she would definitely deserved them.

11) Would you rather A) wash Snape’s hair or B) spend a day listening to Lockhart rant about himself?
I would never rather spend a day with Lockhart! I mean his talks would probably send me right away into clinic with security because I would probably try to kill him. He is extremely annoying XD

12) Would you rather duel A) an elated Bellatrix or B) and angry Molly?
I would like to duel with Belatrix, who knows what I would learn and you now angry Molly is probably more dangerous than Voldemort XD

13) Would you rather travel to Hogwarts via A) Hogwarts Express or B) Flying Car?
I want to travel by Hogwarts Express! I love trains so special wizards candies would be a great bonus to that.

14) Would you rather A) Kiss Voldemort or B) give Umbridge a bubble bath?
Kissing Voldemort sounds like an interesting idea. I would love to sea his reaction if I would live long enough XD

15) Would you rather A) ride a Hippogriff or B) ride a Firebolt?
Of course Hippogriff, they are beautiful creatures!

16) Is there a character you felt differently about in the movies?
Um I don't know I think that they portrayed characters very well.

17) Is there a movie you preferred to the book?
No, I just love books more and I'm enjoying those little details I forgot when re-reading it =)

18) Richard Harris or Michael Gambon as Dumbledore?
Another hard question. Both made them awesomely good in their own way. I can't say who was better.

19) Your top thing (person or event) that wasn’t in the movie that you wanted there the most?
There was huge amount of my favourite things which wasn't in the movie. Meeting Nevill's parents, Meeting Sirius and Buckbeak in fourth book (well a lot of things from fourth book)... I can't remember them all....

20) If you could remake any of the Harry Potter movies which would it be?

Harry Potter and Goblet of fire. They skipped a lot of things (like creatures and magic from labyrinth I loved that in book!).

21 Which house was your first gut feeling you’d be a part of?
Slytherin. Well my most favourite colour is green and then silver and I kinda like snakes too =) I mean I would fit in this house.

22) Which house were you actually sorted into on Pottermore?
Slytherin, I just knew where I belong. Simple as that XD

23) Which class would be your favourite?
Potions (looks very interesting and I love doing experiments, ehm) and Defense against Dark Arts (you know you can learn a lot of usefull things here)

24) Which spell do you think would be most useful to learn?
Reparo probably. Repairs everything I broke? Need it!

25) Which character do you think you’d instantly become friends with?
Probably Hermione because we would definitely meet in library and for sure would talk about books =)

26) If you could own one of the three Hallows, which would it be?
Invisibility Cloak. Going everywhere and not being seen sounds like a lot of fun, muhaha!

27) Is there any aspect of the books you’d want to change?
How Voldemort died and ending. I mean Harry you named your son Albus Severus Potter for real? How cruel of you!

28) Favourite Marauder?
Padfoot. I liked Sirius from start...

29) If you could bring one character back to life, which would it be?
Fred because what would happen to George without him? I can't imagine. And Tonks. Her death was pointless (I can understand why Lupin but Tonks? It was just too much)

30) Hallows or Horcruxes?
Well Horcurxes sounds cool but I wouldn't know where to put them and would be extremely afraid of someone finding them and I really don't want to be used by something. So Hallows for me because Invisibility Cloak is just awesome tool to sneak somewhere XD

Done! It was fun! Well I still don't tag anyone XD

Info

Ok,
In this section I will bring you a lot of covers. I am big cover lover and I have very different and special taste. I prefer darkish things so Y-A covers usually aren't my favs but still there could be exceptions.
Of course I'll use only covers from books I've read and I would talk a lot about them. Which are my favourite, which I don't like and why. I just don't want to pick some covers and place a pictures here I want to analyze them.
So I hope you would participate into a little chit-chat about what you prefer and like or not.
